The Obidient Movement has launched a strong response to former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff over his recent comments on national television, accusing him of diverting attention from Nigeria’s current challenges and lacking the moral authority to lecture Nigerians on patriotism.

In a statement released on Monday by its Media and Communications Directorate, the movement criticized Sheriff’s appearance on Channels Television, alleging that he failed to directly address questions concerning President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly on growing insecurity and economic hardship.

According to the group, rather than responding to concerns about governance, Sheriff shifted the discussion to the Nigerian Civil War and made remarks about Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Defending Obi, the movement described him as a politician who has consistently promoted national unity, inclusive governance and economic development. It pointed to his investments in businesses across different regions of the country and his support for agricultural development in northern Nigeria as evidence of his commitment to national progress.

The Obidient Movement also rejected suggestions linking Obi to separatist sentiments, insisting that the former Anambra State governor has always advocated a united Nigeria where grievances are addressed through dialogue, justice and the rule of law.

The statement went further by alleging that Sheriff had been widely associated with the early emergence of the Boko Haram insurgency, arguing that such a history undermines his credibility to speak on patriotism and national loyalty.

“It is deeply ironic that Ali Modu Sheriff… now wants to lecture anyone on patriotism and national loyalty,” part of the statement read, while also claiming that a Peter Obi-led administration would dismantle what it described as the “lucrative insecurity industry.”

The movement further accused supporters of the current administration of using ethnicity, religion and historical narratives to distract Nigerians from pressing issues such as inflation, insecurity and rising hunger.

Sheriff has not publicly responded to the Obidient Movement’s latest statement. His earlier comments, in which he claimed Peter Obi would leave any political party that denied him a presidential ticket, had already sparked widespread political debate ahead of the 2027 general election.
