Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has claimed that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi would leave any political party that refuses to nominate him as its presidential flagbearer ahead of the 2027 general election.
Sheriff made the remarks on Monday while speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he alleged that Obi’s political moves are driven by a personal presidential ambition rather than long-term party loyalty.
According to the former governor, Obi has consistently positioned himself to secure a presidential ticket and would not remain in any political platform that fails to offer him the opportunity to contest for the nation’s highest office.
“The point is that he, Peter Obi, is a candidate, and the last time you invited me here I told you that people like Peter Obi can never be in one political party because he is pursuing an agenda,” Sheriff said during the interview.
He further claimed that Obi would move to another political platform if denied the presidential ticket, arguing that the former Anambra State governor has associated with several political parties in pursuit of his presidential ambition.
“If he can’t be a presidential candidate, he would move out. Today he has gone to like 20 political parties to become a candidate,” Sheriff added.
The former governor also stressed the importance of national unity, saying political leaders should place Nigeria’s collective interest above regional or personal considerations.
Drawing an analogy, Sheriff said any leader who prioritizes only the interests of their state over the country would not be fit to serve as a national figure.
His comments come amid increasing political realignments and speculations over possible alliances ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with opposition figures exploring strategies to challenge the ruling party.
Peter Obi has not publicly responded to Sheriff’s latest remarks. The former presidential candidate has continued to advocate for governance reforms, economic recovery and national development while remaining active in Nigeria’s political space.
As discussions over the 2027 elections gather momentum, statements from key political figures are expected to fuel further debate over party loyalty, coalition politics and the race for the presidency.
