Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Dr. Paul Enenche, has stirred fresh controversy after declaring that many Afrobeats songs are filled with “rubbish” and are negatively influencing Nigerian youths.
Speaking during the church’s Mid-year Worship Concert, the popular cleric expressed concern over the growing impact of secular music on young people, insisting that many Afrobeats artistes promote unhealthy lifestyles instead of positive values.
According to Enenche, Gospel musicians must rise to the challenge by producing energetic and inspiring songs that resonate with the younger generation while guiding them toward responsible living.
Announcing plans for a special Youth Fire Night scheduled for September 25, the pastor called on Gospel music ministers, including Prinx Emmanuel and others, to prepare for an event aimed at empowering young people through spiritually uplifting music.
“It is better to have music that is saying something that youth is hearing than the garbage that worldly musicians sing,” Enenche declared.
The cleric further alleged that many Afrobeats performers glorify drug use and other harmful behaviours in their songs, warning that such messages are shaping the attitudes and decisions of millions of young listeners.
He argued that replacing what he described as negative entertainment with meaningful, scripture-based music would help youths avoid destructive friendships, make wiser life decisions, and build stronger moral values.
Enenche stressed that Gospel music should not only entertain but also disciple listeners by teaching practical life lessons capable of transforming lives and strengthening faith.
His comments have already triggered conversations across social media, with supporters praising his call for value-driven music while others argue that Afrobeats is a diverse genre that cannot be judged by the actions or lyrics of a few artistes.
As debates continue over the influence of entertainment on society, Enenche’s remarks have once again placed the spotlight on the role musicians play in shaping culture, values, and the future of Nigeria’s youth.
