“Tinubu Took The Bullets” — Presidency Defends Tough Reforms Amid Rising 2027 Pressure

As political tensions gradually build ahead of the 2027 elections, the Presidency has launched a strong defense of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that many of the painful economic reforms introduced by the administration were necessary to prevent Nigeria from sliding into fiscal disaster.

The latest remarks are already generating nationwide debate, especially among Nigerians still grappling with rising living costs, fuel prices, and economic hardship.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga argued that Tinubu inherited a fragile economy burdened by fuel subsidy pressures, multiple exchange rates, heavy debt servicing, and declining government revenues.

According to Onanuga, the President deliberately chose difficult reforms, including the removal of petrol subsidy and the floating of the naira, to stabilize the country’s finances despite the political risks involved.

In a strongly worded opinion piece, he described Tinubu as “the man who took the bullets for Nigeria to survive,” adding that the administration remains prepared to make further difficult decisions if necessary.

The presidential aide also pointed to increased allocations to states and local governments, claiming the reforms had enabled many governors to execute projects and pay salaries more effectively. He cited infrastructure projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway as evidence of the administration’s long-term economic vision.

Onanuga further highlighted gains in the stock market, transportation, electricity, student loans, and consumer credit initiatives as signs of progress under the current government.

However, despite defending the reforms, the Presidency acknowledged that insecurity remains a serious challenge, particularly attacks by bandits and terrorists in some regions of the country.

The comments have since triggered mixed reactions online, with supporters praising the reforms as courageous while critics continue questioning the economic hardship facing ordinary Nigerians.

As Tinubu marks three years in office, one question now dominates political conversations: Are the painful reforms beginning to produce real results, or are Nigerians still waiting for the promised relief?
