The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Kwara State College of Education, Oro, over rising security threats in the area. The decision follows increasing incidents of banditry, kidnappings and criminal activity across parts of Kwara South and North.

An internal memo issued by the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology confirmed that the directive was approved by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as a precautionary measure to protect staff, students and host communities. The closure forms part of a wider strategy that previously saw the relocation of the NYSC orientation camp and the shutdown of schools in volatile areas.

Authorities said the suspension of academic activities would remain until a comprehensive security review is completed. However, the Peoples Democratic Party criticised the move, describing it as a failure of governance and warning that shutting schools could deepen economic and educational hardship in Kwara South.
