Fresh political fireworks have erupted after the Presidency launched a sharp attack on Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi, with President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, describing the former Anambra State governor as “clueless.”
The exchange followed an interview in which Obi reflected on his time as governor of Anambra State, recalling how former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua personally responded to his calls during major emergencies. Obi said the experiences demonstrated the importance of responsive leadership and direct communication between state governors and the Presidency during times of crisis.
Speaking during the interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Obi recounted receiving a distress call at about 2 a.m. over a devastating erosion incident in Umuchiyiani, Ekulobia. He said he immediately travelled to the affected community before contacting then-President Obasanjo, who answered the call despite the late hour. Obi also recalled reaching out to the late President Yar’Adua during a major robbery incident, claiming the former leader maintained regular communication until the security situation was resolved.
However, Obi’s comments drew a swift response from Onanuga, who took to his verified X account to dismiss the former governor’s account with a brief but strongly worded remark, stating that Obi “was clueless then and is clueless now.”
The latest exchange has fueled fresh political debates as Nigeria’s political atmosphere gradually intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
