Nigeria’s leading Islamic body, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack on Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Borno State, declaring that Boko Haram and ISWAP are enemies of both Islam and humanity. The council’s statement comes after the deadly assault that reportedly claimed the life of a teacher and led to the abduction of several students and staff members.
Reacting to the incident, the NSCIA described terrorism as one of the greatest threats facing Nigeria and insisted that the continued attacks on schools, children and innocent civilians can never be justified. The council stated that the repeated kidnappings and killings of schoolchildren remain a despicable crime against humanity and called for urgent measures to end the cycle of violence.
The council also expressed concern that victims of previous attacks in Borno and Oyo states are still being held by their captors, urging authorities to intensify rescue operations until every abducted person regains freedom. According to the NSCIA, the terrorists reportedly exploited Lassa’s market day to infiltrate the community before launching the attack, demonstrating their ability to adapt tactics and exploit security gaps.
While commending the Armed Forces, particularly troops of Operation HADIN KAI, for rescuing some of the abducted victims, the Islamic council stressed that more coordinated efforts are needed. It called for improved intelligence gathering, stronger surveillance, closer collaboration among security agencies and the adoption of technology-driven security systems similar to successful models implemented in some states.
The NSCIA also paid tribute to the soldier and Civilian Joint Task Force member who lost their lives during the rescue mission while extending condolences to the Borno State Government, the affected school and grieving families.
Reaffirming its position, the council emphasized that those responsible for killing innocent people, abducting children and attacking schools do not represent Islam. It urged the government to ensure that terrorists are arrested, prosecuted and punished to restore lasting peace and security across Nigeria.
