Fresh controversy has erupted over the arrest of the Secretary to the Osun State Government (SSG), Teslim Igbalaye, as former presidential spokesman Laolu Akande has faulted the Nigeria Police Force for what he described as inadequate information surrounding the operation.

Akande made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he expressed concern over the lack of a detailed explanation from the Osun State Police Command following the arrest of the senior government official.

The Osun police had on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of Igbalaye during an operation connected to an alleged vote-buying investigation in Osogbo. However, the limited details released by the police have continued to generate questions and speculation among political observers.

According to Akande, the absence of a comprehensive briefing has created room for suspicion, especially considering the high-ranking position occupied by the Secretary to the State Government.

“The police have not given us sufficient information about their activities in Osun State regarding those arrests, and because of that, there is a lot of suspicion about what is happening,” he said.

Akande stressed that although the SSG does not enjoy constitutional immunity from arrest, any action involving such a senior public official should be accompanied by a clear and detailed explanation to the public.

He argued that merely disclosing that two Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were allegedly recovered from the SSG’s residence without explaining the significance of the discovery or the broader scope of the investigation leaves many unanswered questions.

“The police in Osun State need to give us a proper, comprehensive briefing of the suspected criminal activity, especially the one in which the SSG is involved. The SSG is the number three in the state,” Akande stated.

His comments have intensified public interest in the ongoing investigation as political tensions continue to rise ahead of the Osun governorship election. Many Nigerians are now awaiting further clarification from the police on the allegations and the direction of the probe.
