A surprising case unfolding in Ogun State has left many Nigerians stunned after a man, his daughter, and two of his grandchildren were brought before a Magistrate Court over allegations that they impersonated bandits and threatened a woman in an attempt to obtain money.

According to court proceedings, the incident allegedly occurred on June 12, 2026, in the Olorunda area of Abeokuta North Local Government Area. Prosecutors told the court that the two minors, aged 10 and 12, allegedly used their grandfather’s mobile phone to contact Mrs. Esther Lawal, introducing themselves as bandits and issuing threats while demanding money.

The accused, identified as Fagbenro Olaewe and his 19-year-old daughter, Elegbede Nofisat, were arraigned alongside the minors on charges including conspiracy, threatening violence, and demanding money through intimidation by allegedly posing as bandits. All four defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges before the court.

During the hearing, the prosecution argued that the threatening phone call prompted the complainant to immediately notify the police. Investigators reportedly traced the call to the device belonging to Olaewe, leading to the arrest of the family members.

The court heard allegations that the callers threatened to harm the complainant and her family if their demands were not met. However, the allegations remain before the court and have not been proven.

Chief Magistrate A.K. Araba granted bail to the adult defendants in the sum of ₦500,000 each with one surety in like sum. Pending the fulfilment of their bail conditions, Olaewe and Nofisat were ordered remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre, while the two minors were directed to remain at the Juvenile Home in Asero.

The matter has been adjourned until June 30 for further hearing, where additional evidence and arguments are expected to be presented. As the legal process continues, the unusual case has sparked conversations about phone misuse, juvenile involvement in alleged crimes, and the importance of verifying alarming threats before panic spreads.
