A fresh wave of optimism is sweeping across Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector as filling stations hint at another reduction in petrol prices that could push the pump price close to ₦1,000 per litre. The development follows sustained pressure from consumers and a steady decline in global crude oil prices, raising hopes of significant relief for motorists and businesses.

In recent weeks, fuel prices have already begun trending downward after the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) reduced its pump price to around ₦1,210 per litre, shortly after Dangote Refinery lowered its gantry price to ₦1,125 per litre. The adjustments have intensified expectations that further reductions are imminent.

A manager at an MRS filling station in Abuja disclosed that the retail outlet is expected to slash its petrol price again within days, with prices projected to fall to between ₦1,191 and ₦1,201 per litre. Industry insiders believe this could be the beginning of a broader nationwide price adjustment if market conditions remain favorable.

Adding to the optimism, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) confirmed that petrol prices could gradually approach the ₦1,000 per litre mark should international crude oil prices continue their downward trend. According to the association, market competition among refiners, depot owners, and marketers is expected to drive prices lower as businesses compete to attract customers.

The renewed expectations come after Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate crude prices dropped to about $72 and $70 per barrel respectively, following easing tensions in the Middle East. Many Nigerians have argued that falling crude prices should naturally translate into lower pump prices across the country.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has also warned petroleum marketers against profiteering, signaling closer monitoring of fuel pricing practices as consumers demand fair market prices.

While no official nationwide reduction has been announced, expectations are rising that motorists may soon enjoy another round of price cuts. If global oil prices continue to soften, Nigerians could finally see petrol prices return to levels not witnessed since before the recent international energy crisis.
