Fresh Fear in Imo: APP Chieftain Raises Alarm as Killings and Violent Attacks Resurface
An atmosphere of fear appears to be tightening its grip on parts of Imo State as reports of killings and violent attacks continue to trigger concerns among residents. Communities that once hoped for calmer days are again finding themselves at the center of troubling security conversations, raising questions about what may lie ahead.
Against this unsettling backdrop, Imo East Senatorial hopeful of the Action People’s Party (APP), Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, has voiced strong concern over what he described as the disturbing resurgence of insecurity across parts of the state.
According to him, communities including Umuguma, Ihiagwa, and Eziobodo in Owerri West Local Government Area, alongside parts of Ngor Okpala, have experienced rising incidents of violence capable of deepening fear among residents.
Amadi made the remarks during an emotional and unscheduled condolence visit to the family of late Mr. David Onyegbula, a community vigilante officer reportedly killed by suspected attackers in Umuojukwu, Umuagu, Umuguma, Owerri West. The visit happened while he was on a separate engagement with a respected Nigerian Navy veteran and community leader, Rt. Commodore Ogechi Osuagwu.
Speaking with the grieving family, Amadi expressed sympathy to the widow, Mrs. Joy David Onyegbula, and relatives of the deceased, describing the loss as painful and avoidable. He urged the family to find strength through faith and support from loved ones during the difficult period.
Beyond the condolence visit, his comments quickly shifted toward broader concerns about security in the state. He strongly criticized the recurring incidents of violence, insisting that citizens should not live under fear and uncertainty while communities struggle with growing insecurity.
He further stated that the continued violence has affected more than lives alone, arguing that businesses, livelihoods, and daily activities have also suffered severe disruptions.
As tension persists, Amadi called on security agencies to intensify intelligence operations and ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice, insisting that the people of Imo deserve peace, safety, and dignity.
