2027 Tension: PDP Breaks Silence on Alleged Plot to Block Aspirants

Political conversations are heating up after claims surfaced that presidential hopefuls within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were allegedly being prevented from obtaining nomination forms ahead of the party’s presidential primary. The reports quickly sparked speculation and raised questions about possible internal power struggles.

But is there really a hidden gate being shut against interested contenders?

The Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the PDP has now moved to clear the air, strongly dismissing the reports and describing them as misleading and without basis. According to the faction, no official directive was issued to stop any aspirant from participating in the race.

Speaking through the faction’s spokesman, Ini Ememobong, the party maintained that the Interim National Working Committee (NWC) had no knowledge of any action taken by party officials to prevent individuals from purchasing nomination forms.

The clarification comes at a critical time as political activities within major parties continue to gather momentum. To further address concerns, the party explained that it recently reviewed and extended its timetable after appeals from members who requested additional time to complete necessary processes.

Under the revised schedule, the purchase and submission of completed nomination forms will continue until Friday, May 22, 2026, while aspirants who are yet to undergo screening will participate in a special screening exercise scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2026.

Another issue generating attention is the party’s decision to zone its presidential ticket to the South. However, the PDP insists that while zoning remains a party arrangement, it cannot constitutionally stop any Nigerian from seeking elective office.

As political calculations continue behind the scenes, the latest clarification appears aimed at calming tensions and assuring party members that the process remains open.

For many observers, the bigger question now remains: Is this the end of the controversy, or just the beginning of another chapter in the unfolding political drama?
