United States President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping 25 per cent tariff on countries doing business with Iran, escalating pressure amid rising casualties from nationwide protests in the Islamic Republic. Trump said the tariff would immediately affect Iran’s trade partners that also maintain commercial ties with the US.

The decision comes as rights groups report a severe crackdown on protests triggered by economic hardship and political discontent. Norway-based Iran Human Rights said at least 648 people, including minors, have been killed, while arrests are estimated at over 10,000 amid near-total internet shutdowns.

Iran’s major trading partners include China, Turkey, the UAE and Iraq. Tehran has blamed foreign interference for the unrest, while staging mass pro-government rallies.

The White House said Trump remains open to diplomacy but will not rule out military action. Meanwhile, global reactions continue to mount, with the EU considering further sanctions and world leaders condemning alleged human rights abuses.
