The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has called for greater accountability among Nigeria’s military leadership, insisting that some army generals and top security officials must answer for the country’s persistent insecurity.
Amadi made the remarks on Friday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he reacted to President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the expansion of the Nigerian Army.
While acknowledging the importance of strengthening the military, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) argued that increasing troop numbers alone would not solve the country’s deep-rooted security challenges.
According to him, Nigeria’s security crisis goes beyond manpower, pointing instead to issues of leadership, corruption and declining morale within the system.
“Some of our generals and leaders must be held accountable. When the leadership is corrupt, it affects the entire nation,” Amadi said.
He maintained that corruption within public institutions weakens operational efficiency and erodes the commitment needed to effectively combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminality.
“Corruption in the public sector weakens efficiency and undermines national commitment. This pervasive corruption continues to erode public trust and the country’s ability to address critical challenges,” he stated.
Amadi also questioned the country’s current security strategy, stressing that troop expansion without meaningful reforms may fail to deliver the desired results.
“Troop expansion alone cannot guarantee improved security,” he added.
The policy expert further observed that the Nigerian military has increasingly been deployed for duties beyond conventional warfare, including peacekeeping, road security and tackling widespread criminal activities across the country.
“Again, a military of course deployed for peacekeeping, for all kinds of things on the road, for even managing the roads, because our roads are now impassable. There are criminals everywhere,” he said.
His comments come as the Federal Government continues efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture amid growing concerns over banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and violent attacks affecting several parts of the country.
