President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made a passionate appeal to Nigerian doctors and healthcare professionals living abroad, urging them to return home and contribute to the country’s healthcare system, declaring that “there’s nowhere like home.”

The President made the call while addressing members of the Nigerian medical community in the diaspora, emphasizing the critical role skilled professionals can play in transforming the nation’s health sector.

Tinubu acknowledged the significant contributions Nigerian doctors are making across the world but stressed that their expertise is also urgently needed at home to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve access to quality medical services.

According to the President, Nigeria is implementing reforms aimed at creating a better environment for healthcare professionals, expressing optimism that ongoing investments in the sector will encourage more medical experts to return.

“There’s nowhere like home,” Tinubu said, urging Nigerian doctors abroad to be part of the country’s development journey by bringing back their knowledge, skills and global experience.

His remarks come at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenge of brain drain, as thousands of doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers have relocated overseas in search of better working conditions, improved remuneration and career opportunities.

The migration of medical professionals has placed additional pressure on Nigeria’s healthcare system, with hospitals across the country facing shortages of qualified personnel.

Despite the challenges, the Federal Government has repeatedly pledged to improve healthcare infrastructure, increase investments in medical education and create policies that will make the sector more attractive to professionals.

Tinubu’s latest appeal is expected to reignite conversations about the factors driving the exodus of healthcare workers and what more can be done to encourage their return.

Many observers believe that while patriotism remains important, addressing issues such as welfare, infrastructure, security and professional development will be key to reversing the trend and strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system for future generations.
