The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has officially thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring him the party’s preferred presidential candidate in a move that is already generating fresh political reactions across the country.

The announcement was made by APGA’s National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, who explained that the party deliberately chose not to nominate its own presidential candidate after its leadership resolved to support Tinubu’s re-election bid.

According to Opara, the absence of APGA’s presidential candidate on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal should not be interpreted as a failure to comply with electoral requirements. Instead, he said the decision reflects a strategic political position adopted by the party.

He disclosed that the endorsement followed extensive consultations within APGA and was later ratified by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), which concluded that backing President Tinubu’s second-term ambition would serve Nigeria’s overall interest.

Despite not fielding a presidential candidate, Opara insisted that APGA remains fully involved in the electoral process. He confirmed that the party has successfully submitted the names of its candidates for the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly elections through the INEC nomination portal.

The endorsement is expected to strengthen political discussions ahead of the 2027 polls, as major parties continue to build alliances and consolidate support across different regions of the country.

Political observers believe APGA’s decision could reshape campaign calculations, particularly in the South-East, where the party has traditionally maintained a strong political presence.

As preparations for the next general election gather momentum, attention is expected to focus on how other political parties respond to APGA’s endorsement and whether additional alliances will emerge before the official campaign season begins.

With the race to 2027 gradually taking shape, APGA’s declaration has added another significant twist to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape and could influence conversations about coalition politics, regional support and President Tinubu’s quest for a second term.
