Adelabu Quits Power Ministry for Oyo Race: Do His Reforms Justify a Governorship Bid?
Nigeria’s political space is buzzing after Adebayo Adelabu officially resigned as Minister of Power to pursue the Oyo governorship seat. His resignation takes effect April 30 and was confirmed across multiple reports.
But beyond the politics, the bigger question on many lips is simple: what concrete changes did he deliver in the power sector that should convince Oyo people he can govern effectively?
During Adelabu’s tenure, the power ministry repeatedly spoke of reforms—grid stabilization efforts, tariff adjustments, metering drives, and attempts to improve generation and distribution. Supporters point to “modest improvements” and policy reforms in the sector. Yet for the average Nigerian, the lived reality has remained largely the same: unstable electricity, recurring grid collapses, high tariffs, and persistent darkness in homes and businesses.
This is where public skepticism grows stronger.
For many citizens, leadership is judged by impact, not policy language. If electricity supply did not significantly improve under his watch, critics argue that his record as minister may become a major talking point in the governorship race. Oyo voters are likely to ask: if the power sector remained fragile at the national level, what guarantees better governance at the state level?
There is also the political angle. Adelabu is a member of the All Progressives Congress, the ruling party at the federal level, and this naturally raises speculation about whether federal influence could play a role in his ambition. In Nigerian politics, incumbency power and party structure often matter significantly.
However, elections are rarely won on party backing alone.
In Oyo, performance perception, grassroots acceptance, and local alliances will be crucial. The state already has a politically aware electorate that tends to scrutinize candidates beyond federal connections.
So, can people vote for him as governor? That decision will likely rest on whether voters see him as a technocrat with unfinished potential or as a former minister whose biggest assignment left many Nigerians unconvinced.
As the race begins, one thing is certain: Adelabu’s power sector record will remain at the center of the debate.
