Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has called on the Federal Government to integrate Arabic education into Nigeria’s educational curriculum, warning that graduates from Arabic-speaking countries are being unfairly disadvantaged in the nation’s education system.
The governor made the appeal while receiving a delegation of Saudi Arabian businessmen and Nigerian students studying in Saudi universities at the Government House in Bauchi.
According to Mohammed, Northern Nigeria has a long-standing tradition of Arabic scholarship and strong cultural, religious and educational ties with the Arab world, but those connections are gradually being neglected.
He argued that Arabic education should enjoy proper recognition alongside other academic qualifications, especially for Nigerians who obtained degrees and professional certificates from Arabic-speaking countries.
“We must preserve and strengthen our educational heritage while ensuring that graduates of Arabic education receive equal recognition and opportunities within Nigeria,” the governor stated.
Mohammed also expressed concern over the abandonment of the once-thriving Arabic College in Alkaleri, saying previous administrations failed to sustain the institution despite its importance to education and cultural development in the region.
He stressed that reviving such institutions would not only promote quality Arabic education but also expand educational opportunities for young Nigerians seeking knowledge in both religious and secular fields.
The governor’s remarks came during a meeting with a delegation led by the Director of the Centre for Sunnah Studies in Africa, Dr. Shuaibu Abubakar Idris.
Dr. Idris explained that the visit was aimed at introducing Saudi Arabian businessmen interested in investing in Bauchi State and exploring partnerships that could support economic growth and development.
He also briefed the governor on the activities of the Centre for Sunnah Studies in Africa and its support for Bauchi students pursuing higher education in Saudi Arabia.
Representatives of the Nigerian students thanked Governor Mohammed for his encouragement and pledged to use the knowledge and experience gained abroad to contribute to the development of Bauchi State and Nigeria after completing their studies.
The call for Arabic integration is expected to reignite national discussions about educational reform, recognition of foreign qualifications and the role of Arabic studies in Nigeria’s diverse educational landscape.
