The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced what it described as a major diplomatic breakthrough after a delegation of the group was received at the Israeli Knesset in Jerusalem.
According to IPOB, the delegation was led by the Head of its Directorate of State (DOS), Mazi Chris Nwaogu, and was welcomed by the Deputy Speaker of the Israeli Knesset, Nissim Vaturi, alongside Deputy Chairman of the Knesset and member of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, Limor Son Har-Melech.
The development marks one of the group’s most high-profile international engagements in recent times, as IPOB continues to pursue global advocacy for its campaign for self-determination.
In a statement issued by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, IPOB described the meeting as a “historic milestone” in its peaceful diplomatic outreach, expressing appreciation to the Israeli lawmakers for what it called a warm and productive reception.
The group said discussions in Jerusalem reinforced its belief that strategic international partnerships are important to its advocacy efforts. IPOB also reiterated its longstanding position that the restoration of Biafra should be pursued through peaceful means, dialogue and engagement with the international community.
According to the statement, the organisation believes the Biafran and Jewish peoples share historical experiences relating to persecution and the struggle for self-determination, a comparison it said strengthens its commitment to peaceful advocacy.
IPOB further maintained that an independent Biafra would provide lasting security and stability for communities it described as vulnerable, while emphasizing that its campaign is rooted in international law, human rights and the principle of self-determination.
The group also disclosed that similar diplomatic engagements are ongoing in the United States and other countries as part of its broader international campaign.
“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to non-violent struggle, the rule of law, and constructive international engagement,” the statement added.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from the Israeli government regarding the meeting beyond IPOB’s account of the engagement.
The latest development is expected to generate widespread reactions both within Nigeria and internationally, given the sensitive nature of the Biafra question and ongoing discussions surrounding regional self-determination.
