Fresh tragedy struck Borno State after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated beneath a passenger trailer along the Komala village axis in Konduga Local Government Area, leaving one person dead and nine others injured.
According to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the incident on Friday via his X account, the explosion occurred at about 1:30 p.m. on July 2 as the trailer was travelling from Maiduguri to Damboa.
Police sources quoted by Makama said the vehicle, driven by Isa Uba, reportedly struck the explosive device while moving along the route. The IED is suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram or ISWAP terrorists operating within the area, although authorities are continuing investigations into the incident.
The powerful blast reportedly killed one passenger instantly, while nine others suffered varying degrees of injuries. The incident triggered an immediate emergency response involving military personnel, police tactical teams, Explosive Ordnance Disposal-Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) operatives, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters.
The joint security team swiftly evacuated the injured victims to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention. The deceased victim’s body was also taken to the hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed the death before it was released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Following the explosion, EOD specialists secured and cleared the area to eliminate any remaining explosive threats, allowing security personnel to safely continue operations in the community.
Security forces have since intensified combing operations across the affected area to prevent further attacks and reassure residents travelling through the Maiduguri-Damboa corridor, which has witnessed repeated security threats over the years due to insurgent activities.
The latest explosion underscores the persistent security challenges facing parts of Borno State despite ongoing military operations against insurgent groups. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the blast continue.
