Fresh political controversy has erupted after former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of institutionalizing corruption, citing an alleged ₦8.83 trillion spent outside the approved national budget.
Reacting to the development, Obi argued that the reported off-budget expenditure raises serious concerns about transparency, accountability and compliance with Nigeria’s public finance laws. According to him, spending such a significant amount outside the appropriation process undermines fiscal discipline and weakens public confidence in government institutions.
The former Anambra State governor described the alleged expenditure as evidence of what he called systemic corruption within the current administration. He insisted that all public spending should strictly follow constitutional and legislative approval processes to ensure accountability to Nigerians.
Obi maintained that every naira of public funds must be traceable through the national budget, warning that bypassing the appropriation framework could create opportunities for waste, abuse and financial mismanagement.
His comments have added to growing political debates over the Federal Government’s fiscal policies and management of public finances, with opposition figures increasingly demanding greater transparency in the implementation of the national budget.
The Presidency has consistently maintained that the Tinubu administration is committed to prudent financial management, economic reforms and accountability in public spending. At the time of filing this report, there was no immediate official response from the Presidency specifically addressing Obi’s latest remarks.
Public finance experts have noted that certain government expenditures may occur through legally recognized supplementary appropriations, statutory transfers or emergency spending mechanisms, depending on the provisions of relevant laws. Whether any particular expenditure complies with those legal frameworks depends on the specific facts and applicable approvals.
Obi’s comments are therefore his political opinion and criticism of the administration rather than a judicial finding. No court or competent anti-corruption agency has determined that the alleged expenditure constitutes corruption or that any public official has committed an offence in relation to the claims.
The latest exchange is expected to further intensify political discussions as Nigerians continue to scrutinize government spending, economic reforms and the management of public resources.
