As 2027 Approaches, ADC Flag Bearer Faces His Toughest Political Decision Yet

With the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary now concluded and Atiku Abubakar officially emerging as the party’s flag bearer, a new political puzzle is dominating discussions within opposition circles: Who will become his running mate for the 2027 presidential election?

The question is becoming increasingly important as political calculations intensify ahead of what promises to be one of Nigeria’s most competitive elections in recent history.

Having previously selected Peter Obi as his running mate in 2019 and former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in 2023, Atiku now faces a delicate balancing act that could significantly influence his electoral fortunes.

Speculation has largely centered on the South-East, with notable figures such as World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha repeatedly mentioned as possible contenders.

However, one potential option appears to have quietly ruled herself out.

Political analyst and Arise News Director of Politics, Sumner Sambo, disclosed that Okonjo-Iweala has reportedly informed Atiku’s camp that she has no intention of leaving her prestigious position at the WTO. With her second term extending until 2029, sources suggest she is focused on her international responsibilities rather than domestic politics.

That development has shifted attention to other possible candidates, including Ihedioha, who is believed to be under serious consideration due to his political experience and influence in the South-East.

But the South-East may not be the only region attracting Atiku’s attention.

Fresh speculation emerged after reports of a closed-door meeting between Atiku and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi. While details of the discussion remain undisclosed, political observers believe the possibility of a South-South running mate cannot be ignored.

Meanwhile, differing opinions continue to emerge regarding the best political strategy.

APC chieftain Sogbeye Eli argued that selecting a South-East running mate may not significantly boost Atiku’s support in the region because of Peter Obi’s continued influence among voters.

On the other hand, legal practitioner Maduabuchi Idam believes the South-East represents Atiku’s strongest option if the goal is national balance, inclusion, and a stronger challenge to Obi’s political dominance.

Adding to the intrigue, media personality and ADC chieftain Dele Momodu recently shared a campaign-style flyer portraying himself as Atiku’s running mate, fueling even more speculation.

Despite the growing rumors, Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, insists that the final decision will not be based on symbolism or political sentiment.

According to him, Atiku is looking for competence, experience, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to governance.

As the countdown to 2027 continues, one thing is becoming clear: choosing a running mate may prove to be Atiku’s most difficult political decision yet.
