The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the implementation of sweeping new fiscal policy measures and tariff amendments approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a move expected to significantly impact importers, exporters, manufacturers, and businesses across the country.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer of the Service, Abdullahi Maiwada, who said the new measures are designed to strengthen local industries, improve trade administration, and align Nigeria’s tariff system with regional economic policies.
According to the Customs Service, the 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures introduce comprehensive changes to the nation’s Customs and Excise Tariff framework. Among the major adjustments are the revised Import Adjustment Tax (IAT) List for the implementation of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (2022–2027), updates to the National List under the same tariff framework, and a revised Import Prohibition List covering restricted trade items.
The reforms also include a revised list of goods liable to excise duty, the introduction of a Green Tax surcharge on motor vehicles with engine capacities of 2,000cc and above, as well as an updated Export Prohibition List.
Customs urged importers, exporters, licensed customs agents, manufacturers, and other stakeholders to study the new tariff schedules carefully and ensure full compliance with the revised fiscal and regulatory requirements before carrying out future transactions.
To promote transparency and ease implementation, the Service disclosed that the complete 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and Tariff Amendments have been published on its official website for public access.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s economic agenda through efficient trade facilitation, revenue generation, and stronger border security. It also emphasized that the success of the new fiscal measures will depend on the cooperation of businesses and stakeholders operating within Nigeria’s trade ecosystem.
The latest reforms are expected to generate widespread attention as businesses evaluate how the new tariff structure and fiscal policies could affect import costs, exports, manufacturing operations, and overall commercial activities across Nigeria.
