Tension Rises as IPOB Declares May 30 Sit-At-Home Across Southeast

Fresh tension may be building across Nigeria’s Southeast region after the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, announced a total sit-at-home order for May 30, 2026, in honour of fallen Biafran heroes and heroines.

In a statement released by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group described the annual remembrance as a sacred day dedicated to mourning, reflection, and honouring those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War and subsequent struggles linked to the Biafran cause.

According to IPOB, the day is not meant for political gatherings, celebrations, market activities, weddings, burials, or any form of public event. Instead, the group urged people across the Southeast and Biafrans in the diaspora to observe the day with discipline and solemn reflection.

The announcement is already generating reactions as residents and business owners in parts of the Southeast weigh the possible impact of another sit-at-home exercise on economic activities and movement within the region. Previous sit-at-home orders linked to IPOB have often sparked widespread compliance, tension, and concerns over security.

In the statement, IPOB also appealed to governors across the Southeast to fly the Nigerian flag at half-mast on May 30 as a symbolic gesture to honour those who died during the civil war and related incidents over the years. The group insisted that remembering the dead is a moral responsibility that should rise above politics.

Emma Powerful further referenced those allegedly killed during past Biafra remembrance events, including the 2016 Nkpor and Onitsha incidents, stating that their sacrifices should never be forgotten. He maintained that the memory of fallen Biafrans remains central to the identity and history of the movement.

As May 30 approaches, many Nigerians will be watching closely to see how authorities, businesses, transport operators, and residents across the Southeast respond to the declaration. The development is expected to reopen conversations around security, political tensions, and the continued agitation for Biafra in Nigeria.
