A dramatic leadership shake-up has emerged within the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), with the group’s Directorate announcing the suspension of the Office of its Leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as well as the position of Director of Radio Biafra. The unexpected decision has intensified attention on the organisation’s internal structure and future direction.
According to a statement issued after a full-house meeting of the IPOB Directorate, the leadership reviewed intelligence reports concerning communications allegedly originating from Kanu while in detention and concluded that changes were necessary to safeguard the movement’s operations.
The statement, signed by Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, Head of the Directorate of State, said the Directorate would now assume responsibility for administering the affairs of the organisation and overseeing its activities. It also stressed that IPOB was established collectively by supporters in the diaspora and that no single individual possesses the authority to dissolve the Directorate of State.
The leadership claimed that certain communications had contributed to unnecessary arrests and deaths of individuals it described as IPOB members. It further expressed concerns that prison visits and communications are closely monitored and warned against actions that could expose supporters to additional risks.
The announcement follows reports that Kanu had recently dissolved the organisation’s third Directorate of State administration and inaugurated a fourth, naming U.S.-based Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ to head the body. Those reports indicated that the new appointee would oversee the coordination and day-to-day management of IPOB affairs under Kanu’s authority.
In explaining its decision, the Directorate said suspending the offices would help prevent what it described as unchecked actions and unauthorized directives. It also stated that future criminal acts carried out in the name of the suspended offices should not automatically be attributed to IPOB.
The development highlights an apparent internal disagreement over leadership and authority within the organisation. As events continue to unfold, observers are watching closely to see whether the differing positions can be reconciled or whether they signal a deeper restructuring within the movement.
