The Nigerian Army has disclosed that the 44 pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State regained their freedom following a month-long intelligence-led security operation that successfully dismantled the kidnappers’ network. The revelation has drawn praise for the coordinated efforts of multiple security agencies involved in the rescue mission.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director of 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the operation was spearheaded by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Major General C.R. Nnebeife, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser through the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Defence Headquarters, and other security agencies.
The joint operation also involved Special Forces from the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), alongside local vigilantes, hunters and Amotekun personnel. Together, they launched an extensive operation aimed at tracking the criminal syndicate responsible for the May 15, 2026 abduction.
The Army revealed that the operation focused on identifying the masterminds behind the kidnapping, disrupting their logistics network and uncovering their informants and hideouts within the Old Oyo National Park and surrounding areas. Multiple arrests were reportedly made in Oyo State and other parts of the country, placing sustained pressure on the kidnappers and ultimately leading to the unconditional release of the victims.
Military authorities said the rescue mission was carefully executed to ensure the safe recovery of the abducted pupils and teachers while minimizing collateral damage, although some security personnel lost their lives during the operation.
The rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital before being handed over to the Oyo State Government for reunification with their families. Meanwhile, the Army confirmed that follow-up operations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal network and ensure they are brought to justice.
