Rivers 2027 Surprise? Fubara Enters Governorship Race As New Political Battle Begins
Fresh political calculations may already be taking shape in Rivers State as a new development ahead of the 2027 elections is beginning to attract attention. In a move that is raising eyebrows across political circles, Rivers politician Blessing Fubara has officially stepped into the governorship race after obtaining nomination and expression of interest forms under the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
The announcement comes at a time when political alignments and fresh alliances are gradually building momentum ahead of the next general election. What has further fueled discussions is the fact that Blessing Fubara shares the same surname and local government origin with Siminalayi Fubara. Both reportedly hail from Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, although no confirmation has emerged regarding any family relationship between them.
The Rivers State Chairman of the NDC, Success Jack, confirmed that Blessing Fubara had obtained the necessary forms and described the party as determined to compete strongly across all levels in the coming elections.
The latest move also follows Blessing Fubara’s recent departure from the APC to the NDC, a political switch that many observers see as a strategic step ahead of the intense contest expected in Rivers politics.
After his defection, Fubara reportedly described the NDC as a “moving train,” insisting that his political decision was taken in the interest of Rivers people. He further argued that the future direction of the state remains important and expressed optimism that positive changes would emerge after the 2027 elections.
As political temperatures gradually rise, attention may now shift to how other major parties and contenders react. One question is already beginning to circulate across political conversations: Is this the beginning of a major Rivers political showdown?
