Nigeria’s political atmosphere heated up on Wednesday after Senate President Godswill Akpabio delivered a blistering attack on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that he was surprised the opposition party still exists and insisting it should be allowed to “die completely.”

Akpabio made the controversial remarks during the commissioning of a road project in Abuja’s Gaduwa District, where he also showered praise on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for what he described as outstanding performance in transforming the nation’s capital.

Reacting to the emergence of a PDP candidate in a recent election, the Senate President sarcastically questioned whether the party was still alive. Turning to Wike, a prominent PDP figure serving in the APC-led Federal Government, Akpabio jokingly urged him to stop creating confusion by keeping the party politically relevant.

“I didn’t know there was still PDP. If a party has died, allow it to die,” Akpabio declared, drawing reactions from those present at the event.

The Senate President also dismissed any interest in discussing the PDP’s internal affairs, maintaining that the opposition party no longer deserved political attention.

Beyond the political jabs, Akpabio praised Wike’s leadership in the FCT, saying the minister’s projects have transformed Abuja in ways that have left many Nigerians impressed. He argued that the current administration’s infrastructure drive has outshined previous leadership, describing the achievements as remarkable.

His comments are expected to trigger fresh political debate, especially as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum. The remarks may also deepen tensions between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition PDP, whose future has become the subject of increasing political speculation.

Political observers believe Akpabio’s comments are more than mere rhetoric. With political realignments accelerating ahead of 2027, every public statement from key figures is likely to shape alliances, influence voter perception and intensify the battle for Nigeria’s highest offices.
