Months After Rejecting the Idea, Former Rivers Governor Reportedly Accepts Vice Presidential Slot

In a dramatic political turnaround that is already generating intense reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape, former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, has reportedly agreed to become the running mate of African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The development comes just months after Amaechi publicly insisted that he did not join the ADC presidential race merely to settle for the vice-presidential position.

His latest reported decision has therefore sparked fresh debate within political circles, with many observers describing it as one of the most unexpected twists in the opposition camp ahead of the next general election.

Amaechi had contested the ADC presidential primary election, hoping to secure the party’s presidential ticket. However, he was defeated by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who emerged as the party’s flag bearer after polling the highest number of votes.

Following the primary election, tensions appeared to rise within the party as some members alleged irregularities in the process. Amaechi was among those who openly expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome, fueling speculation that relations between both camps had become strained.

That is why the latest revelation has caught many political watchers by surprise.

The immediate past ADC chairman in Rivers State, Leader Sampson, confirmed the development while speaking to DAILY POST on Saturday.

When asked whether Amaechi had accepted the vice-presidential role after weeks of speculation, Sampson responded with a simple but decisive answer: “Yes.”

Although neither Atiku nor Amaechi has officially released a detailed statement regarding the reported agreement, the confirmation is already being viewed as a major step toward consolidating opposition forces ahead of future electoral battles.

Political analysts believe the Atiku-Amaechi combination could significantly alter calculations within the opposition landscape, particularly given Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South region and his experience as a former governor, minister, and presidential aspirant.

The move may also signal a broader effort by the ADC to unite competing interests within the party following a contentious primary season.

However, questions remain about how grassroots supporters and aggrieved members who challenged the primary outcome will react to the emerging alliance.

For now, what seemed politically impossible just weeks ago appears to have become reality.

As Nigerians await official confirmation and further details, one thing is certain: the ADC presidential race has entered a new and intriguing phase.
