Drama in Senate Politics as Oshiomhole Fires Back at Rufai Oseni and Akpabio

A tense political exchange unfolded on live television after Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole took a swipe at Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni, accusing him of constantly targeting him during interviews.

During an appearance on Arise TV’s Morning Show, the former Edo State governor jokingly confronted Oseni, saying he regularly watches the programme and notices what he described as “one-sided punching.” The unexpected comment immediately sparked reactions online, with viewers debating whether the remark was playful banter or a subtle warning.

But beyond the light television moment, Oshiomhole quickly shifted attention to a more serious issue brewing within the Senate — the controversial amendment to the Senate Standing Orders.

The senator openly challenged Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the newly approved rules that would require senators to complete at least two uninterrupted terms before contesting for top leadership positions in the Red Chamber.

According to Oshiomhole, the amendment creates what he called a “serious moral crisis” because Akpabio himself may not meet the same qualification if the rule is strictly applied. He argued that it would be unfair for leaders who benefited from previous rules to suddenly introduce tougher conditions that could prevent others from aspiring to leadership positions.

The former labour leader questioned why the Senate leadership would attempt to narrow eligibility at a time when political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections are already intensifying. He insisted that if the new rule truly reflects the Senate’s position, then Akpabio should lead by example and step aside.

Oshiomhole also referenced former Senate President David Mark, noting that earlier Senate leaders emerged under less restrictive conditions.

The controversial amendment has reportedly divided lawmakers, with some senators alleging that the changes were rushed and strategically designed to limit competition within the National Assembly.

As reactions continue to pour in, many political observers believe the clash could signal deeper divisions within the Senate as the race toward 2027 gradually begins.
