The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that it is fully prepared to conduct a credible, transparent, and peaceful governorship election in Osun State, assuring residents that every necessary measure has been put in place ahead of the August 15, 2026 poll.
Speaking at the Osun State Governorship Election Stakeholders’ Forum in Osogbo, INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, said the commission has completed extensive logistical, technological, and operational preparations across the state’s 30 local government areas.
According to Amupitan, the election will be conducted strictly in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and INEC’s established guidelines, emphasizing that the commission remains committed to delivering an election that reflects the genuine will of the people.
He disclosed that 2,339,233 registered voters are eligible to participate in the election across 3,763 polling units, while 14 political parties will contest for the governorship seat.
To ensure that more eligible voters participate in the election, the INEC chairman announced that the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) has been extended until Friday, July 31, revealing that more than 322,000 newly registered voters have already collected their cards.
Amupitan also highlighted the commission’s technological readiness, revealing that 4,427 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines, including backup devices, have been configured specifically for the election. He stressed that biometric verification remains the only lawful method of voter accreditation and that all polling unit results will be uploaded directly to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) to promote transparency.
Addressing security concerns, the INEC chairman assured stakeholders that intelligence-driven deployments would target identified flashpoints in collaboration with security agencies to prevent violence, voter intimidation, and ballot disruption.
He further reassured residents over the theft of some uncollected PVCs from INEC offices, explaining that the stolen cards cannot be used without successful biometric verification and that affected voters would receive replacements.
As political activities intensify ahead of the election, INEC has urged political parties, candidates, civil society groups, traditional rulers, the media, and voters to work together to ensure a peaceful, credible, and violence-free governorship poll.
