The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has explained why the self-proclaimed Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), Adeyemi Adeniyi, was not produced before the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee despite an earlier directive from lawmakers.
The clarification came after Adeniyi failed to appear before the committee on Wednesday, prompting questions over whether the Nigeria Police Force had ignored the summons issued by the National Assembly.
In a letter addressed to the committee, the police explained that Adeniyi is currently in custody as part of an ongoing criminal investigation involving allegations of conspiracy and forgery. According to the Inspector-General, his continued detention is backed by a valid court remand order, making it impossible for the police to release or present him before lawmakers without judicial approval.
The letter was read during the committee’s sitting by its Chairman, Yusuf Gagdi, who emphasized that the decision was not an act of disobedience by either the police or the suspect.
Gagdi explained that the committee considered it necessary to make the contents of the letter public to prevent the impression that Adeniyi had deliberately ignored the summons issued by the House of Representatives.
The lawmaker further stressed that the committee respects the constitutional principle of separation of powers and has no intention of interfering with an ongoing criminal investigation being handled by the police and the courts.
According to Gagdi, the Inspector-General clearly stated that the existing court order must first be vacated before Adeniyi can lawfully be brought before the National Assembly.
“The IG said the man is in custody because of a standing court order. He stated that the court remanded him, and that is why he is in custody. So, for him to be here, the court order has to be vacated before he can be brought to the National Assembly,” Gagdi said.
The development has added another twist to the House investigation into the alleged PFIPC, with many Nigerians now awaiting the next legal steps as lawmakers continue their probe into the controversial organization.
