Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has called on the Nigerian military and other security agencies to intensify rescue operations in Borno State, urging them to replicate the successful mission that secured the freedom of abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State. His appeal comes amid growing concerns over dozens of people, including children and students, who remain in the hands of kidnappers.
Speaking after the military’s successful rescue operation in Oyo State, the senator representing Borno South commended the Armed Forces for their coordinated efforts but stressed that similar attention should now be directed toward communities in Southern Borno. According to Ndume, at least 79 people are still being held captive across different parts of his senatorial district.
The lawmaker disclosed that 42 residents from Mussa remain in captivity, while another 37 victims were recently abducted from Lassa. He also revealed that several people from Moushi, as well as travellers kidnapped along the Buratai route, have yet to regain their freedom. Among those still missing are children and students from Lassa who were preparing for their NECO examinations before they were abducted.
Ndume acknowledged that the military may not be able to disclose every detail of its operations for security reasons but expressed confidence in the ability of Nigeria’s security agencies to rescue the remaining captives. He emphasized that with adequate training, modern equipment, aviation support and sustained motivation, the Armed Forces can achieve greater success against criminal groups.
The senator praised the recent operation that led to the rescue of the Oyo victims, noting that several suspected kidnappers were neutralized while others were arrested. He believes intelligence gathered from those captured could strengthen future operations against kidnapping networks.
As insecurity continues to affect communities in parts of northern Nigeria, Ndume urged security agencies to build on their recent achievements and intensify efforts to bring every remaining captive home safely. Families of the victims, he said, continue to live in fear while hoping for the safe return of their loved ones.
