The United States has signaled that it will closely observe Nigeria’s 2027 general election, with U.S. Congressman Riley Moore stating that Washington will be paying careful attention to both the conduct and outcome of the polls.

Speaking during an interview with Noire TV, Moore said the upcoming election in Africa’s most populous nation is of significant interest, emphasizing that the electoral process would be closely monitored.

Responding to a question about whether the United States was aware of Nigeria’s forthcoming election and whether it intended to provide political support, the congressman affirmed that the election would be under close observation.

“We will be paying close attention to Nigeria’s 2027 election,” Moore said during the interview.

He further explained that the United States would not only watch the final results but would also assess how the elections are organized and conducted, underscoring the importance of a credible and transparent electoral process.

“We are certainly going to be watching these results and how these elections will unfold and how they are executed, and that is something that myself and my administration will pay very close attention to,” he added.

Although Moore referred to “my administration” during the interview, he did not elaborate on the context of the statement. His remarks have nevertheless sparked discussions about international interest in Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the next general election.

Nigeria’s 2027 elections are expected to attract significant domestic and international attention, with political parties already positioning themselves for what is anticipated to be another highly contested electoral cycle.

International observers have traditionally monitored Nigerian elections, with organizations and foreign governments often assessing the credibility, transparency and fairness of the voting process. Such observation missions typically issue reports and recommendations after elections but do not participate in the administration of the polls.

Moore’s comments add to the growing global focus on Nigeria’s electoral preparations as stakeholders continue to emphasize the need for peaceful campaigns, transparent voting procedures and public confidence in democratic institutions.
