Fresh political tension has erupted after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of presiding over what it described as a worsening humanitarian crisis, following a United Nations report that millions of Nigerians are facing severe hunger.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party said the latest findings by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) paint a grim picture of the country’s food security situation, alleging that government policies and insecurity have pushed millions into hardship.

According to the WFP, more than 17 million people across nine conflict-affected northern states are currently experiencing crisis, emergency or catastrophic levels of food insecurity. The report also indicated that the number of affected persons has increased by nearly two million compared to earlier projections, with Borno, Adamawa and Yobe among the worst-hit states.

Reacting to the report, the ADC described the situation as a “government-created humanitarian disaster,” arguing that persistent insecurity, terrorism and banditry have prevented farmers from accessing their farmlands while economic policies have made food increasingly unaffordable for ordinary Nigerians.

The party alleged that the administration had failed to protect farming communities, contain violent attacks and effectively address the rising cost of living, insisting that the growing hunger crisis reflects years of policy failures.

“These are not opposition figures or campaign slogans,” the statement said, noting that the findings came from the World Food Programme, one of the world’s leading humanitarian agencies.

The ADC further argued that repeated assurances by the Federal Government that economic hardship would be temporary have not translated into improved living conditions for many Nigerians. According to the party, insecurity, declining agricultural production and soaring food inflation continue to worsen the humanitarian situation.

The Federal Government has consistently maintained that it is implementing reforms to stabilize the economy, improve agricultural production and strengthen national security. It has also announced various interventions aimed at addressing food inflation and supporting vulnerable households.

The latest exchange adds to growing political debate over Nigeria’s economic challenges, with opposition parties increasingly scrutinizing the administration’s handling of insecurity, inflation and food security as the country prepares for future political contests.
