Explosive Remarks on Poverty and Fuel Prices Ignite Fresh Political Controversy
A fresh political firestorm has erupted after Demola Olarenwaju, Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, delivered one of the strongest criticisms yet of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking during an interview on Vanguard’s Politics Hub, Olarenwaju accused the current government of worsening economic hardship across Nigeria, claiming that President Tinubu’s most significant achievement since assuming office has been making Nigerians poorer.
The statement has quickly generated debate across political circles, particularly because of the comparison Olarenwaju made between Tinubu’s administration and that of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to him, the economic realities facing ordinary Nigerians have become so severe that some citizens who once criticized Buhari’s leadership are now expressing nostalgia for his tenure.
“Tinubu’s biggest achievement is making Nigeria poorer,” Olarenwaju said, arguing that economic instability has pushed more Nigerians into financial hardship.
His comments centered heavily on the rising cost of living and the sharp increase in fuel prices since the removal of fuel subsidies. Olarenwaju claimed that the amount Nigerians currently spend on petroleum products has increased dramatically compared to previous years, placing additional pressure on households and businesses already struggling with inflation.
Perhaps his most controversial remark was his assertion that the current economic situation has made Buhari appear more favorable in the eyes of some Nigerians.
“I read someone who wrote that he misses Buhari, and I thought, ‘how can someone miss Muhammadu Buhari?’” he said, before adding that the rising cost of fuel and other essentials had changed public perception.
The ADC official further described the Tinubu administration as a “360-degree failure,” alleging shortcomings across multiple sectors of governance.
The remarks come at a time when the Federal Government continues to defend its economic reforms, insisting that difficult policy decisions are necessary to stabilize the economy and create long-term growth.
As political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum, statements such as these are expected to intensify the battle for public opinion. Whether Nigerians agree with Olarenwaju’s assessment or the government’s defense of its policies, one thing is clear: the debate over the state of the economy is far from over.
