Delayed Results, Power Struggles and Explosive Allegations Push Opposition Party Into Turmoil

What was supposed to be a defining moment for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections is rapidly turning into one of the party’s biggest internal challenges yet.

Just weeks after conducting nationwide primary elections, the NDC is now battling a wave of disputes, accusations, protests, and threats of defection that are threatening to overshadow its rise as a major opposition force.

At the heart of the controversy is the party’s failure to officially release the results of the May 29 primaries, despite the National Executive Committee announcing that the outcome had already been ratified and endorsed. The prolonged silence has fueled suspicion among party members, with many questioning whether powerful interests are attempting to influence the final list of candidates.

The crisis appears most severe in Kano State, where tensions between the Kwankwasiya Movement and long-standing NDC officials have escalated into a fierce struggle for control. Allegations that supporters of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso dominated the nomination process have deepened divisions within the party.

Reports that Kwankwaso could leave the NDC if disputes over candidate nominations are not resolved have only intensified concerns about the party’s stability. Behind the scenes, accusations of broken agreements and attempts to control party structures continue to fuel uncertainty.

The controversy has also spread to the South-East, where members of the Obidient Movement have expressed frustration over what they describe as unfair treatment of aspirants and questionable nomination processes.

Adding another layer of drama, a public war of words has erupted between NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi and his former ally, Kenneth Okonkwo. Okonkwo accused Obi and certain party leaders of manipulating candidate selections and collecting money from aspirants, claims Obi has strongly denied and challenged in court.

Meanwhile, youth groups and stakeholders across several states have staged protests demanding transparency, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles. Some party insiders have even warned that replacing winners of the primaries with preferred candidates could trigger lawsuits and damage the party’s credibility.

As reconciliation efforts continue, many political observers believe the NDC faces a defining test. The question now is whether the party can resolve its growing internal battles and emerge stronger, or whether the crisis will derail its momentum before the 2027 elections.
