Defamation Claim Sparks Explosive War of Words Between Former Political Allies
What began as a political disagreement has now escalated into a potentially costly legal confrontation, as former presidential candidate Peter Obi demands N5 billion in damages and a public apology from his former ally, Kenneth Okonkwo.
The dramatic dispute erupted following comments made by Okonkwo during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he leveled a series of allegations against Obi and leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the South-East.
According to a letter issued by Obi’s legal team and led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Alex Ejesieme, the allegations were false, malicious, and damaging to the former Anambra State governor’s reputation.
The lawyers accused Okonkwo of claiming that Obi and regional NDC leaders demanded additional payments from political aspirants after they had already paid official expression-of-interest fees. The legal team further stated that Okonkwo alleged there was documentary evidence supporting the claims and accused Obi of personally influencing candidate selections.
Obi’s lawyers argued that the statements portrayed their client as someone involved in bribery, fraud, extortion, and other criminal activities. Describing the allegations as reckless and completely unsupported by facts, they demanded a full withdrawal of the statements, a public apology, and N5 billion in damages.
The legal notice also warned that failure to comply within seven days could result in a lawsuit seeking financial compensation, injunctive orders, legal costs, and further remedies.
However, the controversy took another dramatic turn when Okonkwo responded publicly on social media.
In a strongly worded post, the actor-turned-politician dismissed the demand and mocked the compensation claim. He stated that he had not yet reviewed the letter but challenged Obi and his legal team to proceed with court action if they believed their case was strong enough.
Okonkwo also hinted that any legal proceedings could expose information he obtained during his time serving as Obi’s spokesperson, adding another layer of intrigue to an already tense dispute.
The clash has drawn significant attention because of the history between both men, who once worked closely together politically. Now, their relationship appears to have deteriorated into one of the most public and contentious political feuds in recent memory.
With both sides refusing to back down, many observers believe the next move could determine whether this dispute remains a media battle or evolves into a landmark courtroom showdown.
