Gumi Sparks Fresh Controversy With Claim US Is Targeting Nigeria’s Resources
Controversial Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi has once again stirred nationwide debate after alleging that the United States is becoming increasingly interested in Nigeria’s natural resources.
In a strongly worded statement shared on his Facebook page, Gumi described Western nations as “predators” and warned Nigerians to pay close attention to growing foreign involvement in the country’s affairs.
According to the cleric, the recent international focus on security operations and terrorism within Nigeria should not distract citizens from what he described as deeper geopolitical interests tied to the nation’s vast resources.
“The West is a predator. US’s attention is now on Nigerian resources,” Gumi wrote, a statement that quickly generated reactions across social media and political circles.
While acknowledging that nobody sympathises with terrorists, the Islamic scholar argued that Nigerians should remain concerned about preserving national sovereignty and avoiding excessive foreign military influence on local soil.
He questioned the need for foreign military participation in certain security operations, insisting that aerial attacks on stationary targets do not require international forces operating within Nigeria.
Gumi also referenced the “Thucydides Trap,” a political theory suggesting that conflict becomes likely when a rising power threatens to challenge an existing dominant power. He used the theory to criticise what he described as growing global tensions driven by economic interests and geopolitical competition.
The cleric further claimed that the United States is experiencing intellectual decline, accusing its leadership of prioritising money and military conflicts over diplomacy and strategic thinking.
His comments are already triggering mixed reactions online, with supporters praising his warnings about sovereignty and foreign influence, while critics accuse him of making controversial and divisive statements capable of fueling distrust.
Security analysts say discussions around foreign military cooperation, terrorism, and resource politics remain highly sensitive topics in Nigeria, especially as international partnerships continue expanding in the fight against insurgency and extremist groups.
As debates continue, Gumi’s remarks have once again placed him at the centre of national conversations surrounding security, foreign influence, and Nigeria’s strategic importance on the global stage.
