Peter Obi Criticises Leaders Over Foreign Trips
Former Anambra State Governor and presidential hopeful Peter Obi has sparked fresh political debate after criticising foreign trips by Nigerian leaders, insisting that state visits must deliver real economic benefits rather than become “fashion displays” and ceremonial outings.
In a strongly worded statement shared on his X account, Obi argued that diplomacy should focus on attracting investments, technology transfer, industrial partnerships, factory expansion, and job creation instead of glamorous appearances and photo opportunities.
According to him, serious nations use foreign engagements strategically to strengthen their economies and secure measurable benefits for citizens.
Obi pointed to a recent visit by Donald Trump to China, where major American business and technology leaders reportedly accompanied the delegation, resulting in multibillion-dollar trade agreements, including large aircraft orders.
“That is how serious nations approach diplomacy,” Obi stated, stressing that foreign policy should align directly with economic growth, innovation, productivity, and industrial development.
Without directly mentioning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by name in parts of the statement, Obi questioned the economic value of Nigeria’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom.
He asked what concrete investments, factories, industrial agreements, or employment opportunities the trip produced for Nigerians despite the large delegation of government officials and political aides that reportedly travelled.
“It is not enough to ride horses, wear matching uniforms, attend royal banquets, and release glossy photographs,” Obi said, adding that symbolism alone cannot solve Nigeria’s economic hardship.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate also highlighted the country’s worsening insecurity, rising poverty, inflation, unemployment, food crisis, and declining industrial productivity, insisting that every government expense on international travel must generate tangible economic returns.
His remarks have already triggered mixed reactions online, with supporters praising his focus on accountability and productivity while critics accuse him of politicising diplomatic engagements.
As conversations around the 2027 elections continue to intensify, Obi’s comments are likely to deepen political debates about leadership priorities, governance style, and the economic direction of the country.
