Certificates Not Enough: Minister Urges Graduates to Build Nigeria’s Economy

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has warned that certificates alone cannot drive economic prosperity in Nigeria. Speaking at the 35th convocation of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, Tijani said national growth depends on applied skills, productivity, and problem-solving, not just academic qualifications.

He challenged Nigerian graduates to see their degrees as tools for impact, urging them to identify real problems in their communities and apply their knowledge to solve them. According to him, Nigeria’s biggest challenge is not ambition but productivity, stressing that prosperity grows when citizens apply skills with purpose.

Tijani also called on universities to align education with societal needs, noting that no country develops faster than the relevance of its institutions and the quality of their graduates. He announced the donation of a digital laboratory to strengthen tech education at the university.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accessible, quality education, while the Vice-Chancellor revealed that over 5,800 students graduated, with the university maintaining full accreditation across courses.
