Lagos Police Drag Man to Court Over $7,000 Romance Scam

In a development that highlights Nigeria’s ongoing cybercrime battle, police detectives in Lagos have arraigned a man over an alleged $7,000 online romance fraud. Samson Onaolapo was brought before the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, on charges linked to conspiracy, impersonation and obtaining money under false pretence.

Prosecutors told the court that the suspect allegedly posed as a United States citizen, using a false identity to lure victims into an online relationship and extract money over several years. The police said the funds were traced to unlawful online activity, violating multiple anti-fraud and cybercrime laws.

Onaolapo denied all allegations when the charges were read. While the prosecution pushed for his remand, the defence requested time to file a bail application. The court ordered his remand and fixed a trial date, setting the stage for a closely watched Lagos romance fraud case.
