Residents of Isa Local Government Area in Sokoto State are fleeing their homes and taking dangerous routes into the Niger Republic following renewed threats linked to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. The exodus reportedly began after gunmen issued warnings to communities around Tidibali, triggering panic across the area.
According to the Sokoto Eastern Zone Development Association, over 20 settlements have been deserted as families seek safety across the border. Displaced residents say kidnappings have surged, with ransoms paid without the release of victims, worsening fear and uncertainty.
Some fleeing residents were reportedly intercepted and returned by authorities, yet many insist crossing into Niger remains safer than staying behind. Elderly farmers and families say insecurity has lingered for years, forcing them to abandon livelihoods and homes. While security deployments are being reported, many displaced persons say they will not return until safety is guaranteed.
