The Nigerian military has deployed fighter aircraft to the Benin Republic following reports of a failed coup aimed at toppling President Patrice Talon. According to security sources, the jets departed Lagos and were sighted conducting aerial surveillance within Benin’s airspace as Nigeria moves to closely monitor unfolding political developments in the neighbouring country.
A senior security official emphasized that the deployment is precautionary, not offensive, and is intended to assess regional security threats and protect Nigeria’s national interests.
The attempted coup was reportedly led by Lt. Pascal Tigri, who announced the dissolution of state institutions, suspension of the 2025 Constitution, closure of borders, and full military takeover. The coup group identified themselves as the Military Committee for Rebuilding.
Nigeria’s swift response underscores its concern over instability in a neighbouring state and its potential impact on regional security.
