Fresh cracks have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the Taminu Turaki-led faction questioned a recent Federal High Court ruling that favoured the camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The faction alleged that the judgment may have been influenced by what it described as the “politics of power, money and greed,” insisting that it would not back down from the legal battle over the party’s leadership.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the group expressed disappointment with the court’s decision to strike out its suit seeking official recognition of its leadership.

Although the faction said it respects the judiciary and the authority of the court, it argued that the ruling was inconsistent with previous decisions delivered by the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court on related matters.

According to the statement, the group believes the verdict does not reflect established judicial precedents, leaving it with no option but to challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal.

“While we respect the judgment of the trial court, we respectfully consider that it is against the extant judgments of the Appeal and apex courts, leaving the plaintiffs with no option but to appeal the judgment and the rulings therein,” the statement read.

The Turaki-led faction confirmed that its legal team has already been instructed to file an appeal, expressing confidence that the appellate court will overturn the ruling and reaffirm what it described as the principles of internal party democracy.

The group also argued that the outcome of the legal battle goes beyond the PDP, saying it would have significant implications for Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and the future of credible opposition politics.

Despite acknowledging that political influence may continue to shape events for some time, the faction maintained that it remains optimistic about securing victory through the judicial process.

The latest development adds another chapter to the prolonged leadership crisis within the PDP, a dispute that continues to generate uncertainty as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
