Fresh controversy has erupted ahead of the 2027 general election after businessman and public commentator Isaac Fayose claimed that Nigeria’s judiciary, rather than the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), now determines who becomes the country’s leader.
Fayose, the younger brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, made the remarks during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he expressed concerns about what he described as the gradual erosion of Nigeria’s democratic process.
According to him, elections in Nigeria no longer end at the ballot box, arguing that the courts have become the final authority in deciding presidential outcomes. His comments have since generated mixed reactions among political observers and Nigerians on social media.
“There is nothing like INEC or democracy in Nigeria,” Fayose said, alleging that the country now operates what he described as “government of the court, by the court and for the court.”
He argued that several presidential elections over the past decade have ended in legal battles, claiming that this has shifted significant political influence to the judiciary. Based on this observation, Fayose suggested that the 2027 presidential election could also end up being decided in court.
The businessman further alleged that opposition political parties are facing increasing pressure, specifically mentioning the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). According to him, recent political developments have weakened the ability of opposition parties to compete effectively ahead of the next general election.
Fayose also warned against what he described as the emergence of “dictators who are not in military uniforms,” insisting that Nigeria must protect its democratic institutions and ensure that electoral outcomes reflect the will of the people.
His remarks come as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties already forming alliances and positioning themselves for the presidential contest.
While his comments reflect his personal opinion, they have added to the growing national conversation about electoral reforms, judicial independence and the future of democracy in Nigeria.
