Fresh political debate has emerged ahead of the 2027 general election after Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain, Buba Galadima, explained why many Northern political stakeholders have aligned with the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, Galadima said the decision was driven by strategic political calculations rather than ethnic or religious considerations. His remarks have reignited conversations about possible alliances that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape before the next presidential election.
According to Galadima, the North believes that a Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket represents the strongest option for rescuing Nigeria from its current challenges while promoting national unity.
Describing the proposed alliance as a “healing ticket,” he said the partnership could help Nigerians move beyond longstanding political, ethnic and regional divisions that have shaped the country’s politics for decades.
Galadima explained that political decisions should be based on realistic calculations and the ability to deliver good governance, not on sentiments surrounding tribe or religion. He maintained that the support for Obi reflects what many stakeholders see as the best path toward rebuilding trust and strengthening national cohesion.
He acknowledged that the decision has attracted criticism from some quarters, noting that many people have questioned the North’s support for Obi because of political and regional differences. However, he insisted that the alliance is intended to unite Nigerians rather than deepen existing divisions.
The NDC chieftain further stressed that his political philosophy does not revolve around ethnic or religious identity, arguing that Nigeria’s future depends on leaders who can inspire confidence across all regions.
His comments come as political parties and influential figures continue to explore coalition talks and strategic partnerships ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts believe such alliances could play a major role in determining the outcome of the presidential race.
With the political atmosphere already heating up, Galadima’s remarks are expected to fuel further discussions about coalition politics, national reconciliation and the emerging alliances that could define Nigeria’s next election.
