2027 Political Shock? Dele Momodu Tells Southern Aspirants To Step Aside Before It Is Too Late

As political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential election continue to intensify, veteran journalist Dele Momodu has delivered a message that could spark fresh debate across Nigeria’s political landscape. His warning is simple but potentially explosive: opposition forces may be walking into a trap if they allow personal ambitions and regional sentiments to dominate their strategy.

Speaking during an interview, Momodu cautioned that insisting on zoning the presidency could eventually hand a political advantage to President Bola Tinubu.

According to him, opposition parties need to focus more on consensus and electoral strategy rather than regional considerations if they hope to mount a serious challenge in 2027.

He argued that Nigeria’s political reality goes beyond emotional debates and that the North remains a powerful voting bloc capable of influencing the outcome of national elections.

Momodu suggested that if opposition figures are truly serious about defeating the ruling government, they may need to rethink their approach and avoid fragmenting support across multiple candidates.

In a move likely to trigger strong reactions, he advised southern political figures including former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Anambra governor Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to consider urgent discussions on consensus.

“I would suggest that southern candidates should meet urgently and maybe withdraw for Jonathan or Peter Obi,” he stated.

He warned that allowing multiple southern candidates to remain in the race could divide support and weaken opposition chances.

Momodu also predicted that the next presidential contest would involve some of Nigeria’s most influential political figures, describing the coming battle as a contest among major political heavyweights.

With alliances, calculations and negotiations already unfolding quietly behind the scenes, Nigerians may now be asking whether 2027 will become a battle of personalities or a battle of political strategy.
