Fresh political tension has erupted in Oyo State after members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, took control of the party’s state secretariat in Ibadan.
The dramatic takeover, which occurred on Thursday, marks a new chapter in the ongoing leadership tussle within the PDP, as rival camps continue to battle for control of the party ahead of future political contests.
The party secretariat, located in the Molete area of Ibadan, had reportedly been under the control of the faction aligned with Governor Seyi Makinde before supporters of Wike moved into the premises and assumed control.
Eyewitnesses said hundreds of party members accompanied the Wike-backed group as they occupied the secretariat, chanting party slogans and declaring themselves the legitimate leadership of the PDP in the state.
Confirming the development in a telephone conversation, the Oyo State PDP Chairman, Professor Abdulrahman Akinoso, dismissed suggestions that the action was carried out by a faction, insisting that the authentic leadership of the party had merely reclaimed its office.
“It is true. It is not faction. It is PDP. We have taken over the premises. It was in the morning. We were there in the morning. We just left the premises. We are now in control. We have taken over the premises,” Akinoso said.
The takeover comes amid prolonged internal disagreements within the PDP, with divisions between political camps loyal to Governor Makinde and those aligned with Wike becoming increasingly visible in recent months.
Political observers believe the latest development could further deepen the crisis within the opposition party, especially as preparations intensify for future elections. The struggle for control of party structures across several states has remained a major issue since the PDP’s internal leadership disputes escalated.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Governor Seyi Makinde’s camp regarding the takeover of the secretariat.
The incident is expected to generate fresh political reactions as stakeholders closely monitor the next steps in the battle for the soul of the PDP in Oyo State.
