Utomi Reveals Why Peter Obi’s Exit from ADC Could Be a Game-Changer for 2027

As political alignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election continue to reshape Nigeria’s landscape, a fresh revelation from former presidential candidate Pat Utomi has sparked debate. According to Utomi, Peter Obi’s decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) may have saved him from a political setback that could have derailed his ambitions.

The respected economist and political strategist described Obi’s move to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) as a “smart” and timely decision, suggesting that remaining within the ADC might have left the former Labour Party presidential candidate trapped in a controversial primary process.

Obi’s departure from the ADC came only weeks before he was officially nominated as the NDC’s presidential candidate. The development gained even more attention when he unveiled former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate, creating what many observers see as a formidable political alliance ahead of the next general election.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE Television, Utomi argued that although internal polling suggested Obi would have emerged victorious in a fair ADC primary, the circumstances surrounding the party’s nomination process raised serious concerns.

According to him, the complaints that followed the ADC presidential primaries, particularly from aspirants such as Chibuike Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-deen, reinforced fears that the process lacked transparency. Both politicians reportedly rejected the outcome of the primaries, fueling wider discussions about internal democracy within political parties.

Utomi did not hold back in his criticism of the broader political system, describing many primary elections as exercises that merely create the appearance of democracy while outcomes are effectively predetermined. He suggested that such practices continue to undermine public confidence in political institutions and democratic processes.

His remarks have added a new dimension to conversations surrounding Obi’s political strategy. With the NDC ticket now secured and a high-profile running mate by his side, supporters believe the former Anambra governor has positioned himself strongly for the race ahead.

As political maneuvering intensifies, one question remains: did Peter Obi simply switch parties, or did he successfully avoid a battle that was already decided before it began?
